Today I rewarded positive behaviour. At the moment I was doing it, I realised that it was the first time in this class (from hell) that I actually rewarded the good behaving students, in stead of punishing the bad ones.
It suddenly occurred to me that, in a way, students are like dogs. They will only perform a certain trick if they know that they will be given a bone in return.
During my teachers' course I learned that students behave badly because they want attention. Suddenly today I realised that this is exactly what is happening in my class. It struck me like lightening that, when I think about it, the students in my class don't have any incentive that makes them want to be good. This will have to change. I will definately give this some thinking.

I feel stuck in that "punish the bad kids" rut already, so I hear you cluckin' big chicken. It is nice to reward the good kids; I just wish it would happen more often.
